We’re Back to Normal. Almost.

Hi everyone,

Just wanted to post a quick update about our outage here last night.

Seems our host decided to roll out a major PHP upgrade to their servers, which caused a huge number of their client sites to come crashing down. Including, yours truly!

Why they decided to do this in the middle of the day is beyond me.

Luckily, this happened while most of you were eating dinner, or getting ready to head over to the BOE meeting. I’m just glad the site was up all day beforehand while there was heavy traffic hitting us in preparation for it. Bad timing, but could have been much worse if we were down earlier in the day when people needed to reach us.

Anyway, today I’m stuck restoring some custom coding that was lost. NutleyWatch isn’t a complex website, but we already have over 70 pages of content, and there’s a lot going on behind the scenes that you don’t see. Since some scripts I was using are no longer compatible, I need to figure out an alternate way to do certain things on the site.

For example, the “Top Stories” feed that we had in the right sidebar needed to be dumped. That was a great feature and heavily used, but it wasn’t very “clean” code. I’ll have to figure out another way to do that while keeping it lightweight.

So again, sorry for the blackout last night. Later this evening, I should be more or less caught up. Then we can begin addressing last night’s BOE meeting, and a few other items which have popped up.

Only 5 more days until the election!
