Mayor Raymond Kimble and members of the Belleville Township Council have submitted the following statement to NutleyWatch:
It’s a sad day for the people of the Township of Belleville. The trust that they placed in one of their elected officials has been violated in the most offensive manner. National and local revelations this week have reminded us all that racism and bigotry is alive and well, but they have also shown that it cannot and will not be tolerated, and that swift and decisive action is required when it is exposed.
As the representatives of the Township of Belleville and of its 36,000 residents, we have no choice but to call for Councilwoman Burke’s immediate resignation from the Township Council, immediate resignation from her seat on the Democratic Committee, and for an official inquiry to be launched. The scientific evidence confirms that the vile remarks are those of Councilwoman Burke, and it also confirms that she has lied publicly on the record when confronted with the recording.
Racism, bigotry, dishonesty, and obstructive behavior will not be tolerated from our public servants. Belleville residents are obviously offended by the racist comments on the recording, yet they are more outraged by the lying that accompanied and compounded the entire situation.
Councilwoman Burke must step down so the healing process can begin and the Township Council can regain the trust of the constituents.
Thank You
Mayor Raymond Kimble
Councilman Kevin G Kennedy
Councilman Steve Rovell
